Dr. Yannis Stouraitis

University of Edinburgh

 

Has earned a major degree in History (1999) and an M.A. in Medieval Studies (2002) at the University of Ioannina. In 2007, he concluded his Ph.D. in Byzantine History at the University of Vienna, where he has worked as a full-time post-doctoral fellow (2008 – 2015) and an adjunct lecturer (2009 – 2017). His research in the Moving Byzantium Project as Team Member (1 April 2016 – 31 March 2017) focused on typologies and microstructures of revolt in the High Medieval Byzantine Empire.

 

Research interests:

  • Social history of the Byzantine Empire (7th–15th c.)
  • Social identities and visions of community
  • Warfare as a social phenomenon – Byzantine war ethic from a comparative perspective 
  • Social and cultural role of historiography
